Holding Hudson tighter

I have so many friends who pray...
we rely on prayer for strength, to see us through, for hope...
To all my friends out there...
please lift up the Knight family in prayer...
their 4 year old warrior lost his battle with this devastating disease.
The greatest gift, friends and strangers alike, is to pray for this family, that they feel the comfort of God and his people all around them today and in the months to come.

I can't say I was a regular follower, but I did stumble across their blog in the past, as I searched out mito families.
When I read about this heartbreaking news from other families I am linked to, I broke down crying...
for this family
in fear
not so much for this little boy...I do believe he is healed and in the presence of Jesus dancing and singing praises...

It brings me back to the fact that this disease has so many faces...
just by looking at their blog pic you would never know you were looking into the eyes of a catastrophically ill child.
Then there is Hudson, where the catastrophe of his illness is more obvious....
can't talk
can't walk
can't hold his head
can't eat
seizes daily

it is so hard to understand or even grasp why these children have to suffer so much...
for me there are 2 voices that stew in my head...
the one filled with anger, and heartbreak that little children have to suffer, and live a life that no child deserves...children should be full of giggles, joy, exploration, care-free....
the other voice tells me...
these children are here to teach those around them, God has a huge purpose in their early lives, and once they have done their job, they return to a place of glory and unimaginable love and wholeness.

For me, this is how I survive the every day of seeing my child suffer. The lessons he is teaching, the lives he has already touched....God has the time line, he knows tomorrow for each one of us, and there are no guarantees except for this very moment.

The last few day as I stare into Hudson's eyes, I am so grateful it is my arms that are wrapped around his failing body, and I take in how he feels, how he smells, how he sounds....I just can't help but treasure quiet moments with him a bit more.

who do I thank?

I knew this might be an issue...
if Hudson started sounding better...

is it

(A) Augmentin
(B) Claratin
(C) Both

24 hours later and I am definitely hearing less crackling, less coughing, suctioning less.

The doc only gave me a 4 day Rx for Claratin, but I know it is over the counter, so I am wondering if I should get more and continue with it.

I am also wondering if the Claratin could be the culprit of Hudson not sleeping last night.
He woke me at 3:45 and was restless and wide awake....he is still awake!
Not his norm.
Instead of giving him the Claratin at 6p.m. feed ( like I have the last 2 days), I gave it to him this morning to see if it helps with tonights sleep.

I already forewarned my kids if I am super-crabby mom when I pick them up from school it is because of no sleep.

Off to work....my first day back in almost 3 months!

A day in the life of mito boy and mom...

(Our day 9-20-10)

Wake at 6:45 to get siblings off to school

Come home clean up, get ready for 10 a.m. P.T.

10 a.m. PT

11 a.m. feed Hudson in PT parking lot
then off to the Y

Work out for 45 min. with Hudson parked next to me

Run to Costco for gas
run inside Costco for 3 items (one hand pushing Hudson's stroller, one hand pushing Costco cart)
with only 15 min to spare

Run home to get more formula
and slap a sandwich together for the road (for me)

Drive 1 hour to Seattle Children's for Hudson's 2p.m. GI apt.

2p.m....
GI doc happy from GI perspective...nothing changes (except a new button for Hudson)
GI concerned about how H sounds and the fact that 2 weeks of antibiotics has done nothing....nada!!!

GI recommends taking him to Pediatrician to get Augmentin, try allergy med (cuz he sounded so good in Vegas with the dry heat)

3p.m.
Feed Hudson in Children's parking lot before heading back to Gig Harbor

Now an hour + drive home with traffic and a 5 alarm fire off of I-5 in W Seattle

On way home call Pediatrician office. They get us in at close same day.

My mom (now home from vacay...thank God) picks up big H and middle H from After School Care for me by 4

Get to moms by 4:30...say hi to my kids and find out about their day

Leave to go to Pediatrician for a 5p.m. apt.

Pediatrician says the crackling and junk sounds like it is going into his chest
and gives us a Rx for Augmentin, Claratin, and Albuterol...he says Hudson needs treatments to try and break the gunk up so he can breathe better...(mind you...2 weeks he has been sick now!)

wait for Rx's....

go to my mom's....it is now 6:30

she kindly feeds all of us (again, made the day so much better to have my mom here!)

got home at 8:30

prepare 6 syringes of meds and formula

kids get in pj's
put kids to bed
get Hudson in pj's
feed and medicate Hudson
put him to bed

take a shower (cuz I am still in work out clothes and dried sweat from my 11:30a.m. wk out)
blow dry hair...

get into bed and it is now 10 p.m......

aaahhhhh.... what a day!

(thankfully Hunter did much homework over the weekend....I was unable to even go there last night!)

Here is to a quieter day today (home based pt, speech, hope to get to Y, Trader Joes, house work,homework....

Hudson is still sleeping...praying the meds work this time around...
otherwise it will be off to see Dr. Carter in Pulmonary!

Hunter's turn

I actually had to wake Hudson up this morning to take Hunter to the pediatrician this morning.

Hunter has been complaining about headaches. Lately he comes home from school and tells me at one point  in the day he had a headache... again.
He says he feels dizzy and has to "focus" after playing the Wii for a lengthy amount of time.

Hunter is quite a hypochondriac....he really is. He embellishes and is very dramatic at times, so it can be difficult to know when things are serious or not.
Being a mom of a seriously ill child, my heart races at the thought of serious illness touching any of my other babies. It always had before Hudson, it is different when it has actually touched your family, one of your children, the possibility can happen to any one at any time.
So, after hearing about this for a month or so, I decided to take him in.
We dropped Hailey off and then went to the doctor for Hunter.
Hunter was excited to see the Pediatrician. Hunter thinks he is so cool, and wanted to bring his show and tell to him...I told him no, this was not a social visit. (Hunter is such a character!)

Anyways, we went through all the symptoms and he thoroughly checked Hunter out.
Of course my mind went to the "bad place" when he turned the lights out to look behind his eyes, I was praying the whole time....thankfully he checked out fine.

I am suppose to keep a diary of when Hunter complains about headaches.
He thinks it could be a combo of his anxiety and vision changing.
I told him about our family situation and how emotional Hunter has been and he agreed it all
could be related. He needs to drink more water and get more sleep.
It bothers me that this could be now taking a toll on Hunters health.
I try so hard to be a happy mom, not show my fears or anxieties to the kids
and yet Hunter is still affected by truth no matter how much I try and protect him.

Hunter had the doc also check out a "bump" on his head that he has been complaining about for months.
I dismissed it as a pimple, but the doctor had a different name for it, basically a benign cyst, that can be removed by a dermatologist if it continues to bother him. He said it is harmless and has nothing to do with the headaches.

The vision test I am sure is the other piece. Both Paul and I have poor vision and started wearing glasses/contacts in grade school.
The basic office test showed Hunter's vision at 20/30, so I need to take him to a ophthalmologist.

In the end I am thankful there is nothing too serious going on here.
and if by chance Hunter will need glasses...
well, I think he would look pretty darn cute!

Could this be the beginning?

We had the worlds LONGEST winter last year.
I don't mean weather wise...
I mean cold and flu season wise!

It was awful...
If you were following us since last winter, you will remember Hudson was hopitalized 3 times in a very short time frame...November (right after Halloween) December (right before Christmas) March (when Hailey turned 6)
All 3 were E.R runs and were due to flu or the common cold...both can easily take Hudson's life.

So...
I dread the cold/flu season this year...DREAD it!

Hudson is still coughing thick yellow goop and it has been over a week.
I instantly started him on antibiotics and the nasal spray antibiotic for the major infection he had in the nasal cavity last time he sounded like this.
He sounds awful...awful, awful!!!

One night I was getting very worried about his breathing. It was very coarse and very fast, and this was while he was sleeping. It freaks me out. Between the cold and the way he sounds I get up in the morning praying he is breathing peacefully, and the cough is gone. I am thankful as he gets through each day when he has the common cold. It is a very scary existence.

I started thinking about how great he sounded and did in Vegas. I even have been wondering if it wouldn't hurt to see an allergist.  However,if it was allergies, I wouldn't have gotten slammed with a cold and cough too...yeah, it's been a pretty rough couple of days. Yesterday I finally started feeling better and today I am coughing a little less.

Why, oh why does it take Hudson so long to get over a cough? I just don't get it. I hate seeing him like this and as I said before it is making seizures worse.

I canceled his home based P.T. yesterday.
The picture above was yesterday before she was suppose to come.
Not only is he so sad and pathetic looking cuz he's sick,
but if your thinking that chair has got to go...I realize this!
He is too big and it is a typical booster and lets face it...I need to let it go...
and I will...
as soon as someone brings me something else to sit him upright in!

So after last winter I am just feeling really apprehensive about heading into another one.
Lets not forget...
last winter I had my husband here, he was still working out of WA...
this year just me, myself and I....
and the combo is just causing some major anxiety!

getting back up

this has kind of been my anthem recently...
you know how somw songs and their lyrics just hit you at the right time and place in life and you can totally relate?

I touched on it a little a few posts back...

I do feel like I have been knoocked down a bit.
Probably much of it self-inflicted.

Apart from Jesus, I am a train wreck...seriously. I could not be living this life I am and keeping sane if I did not have my faith that this is merely a snap-shot in time, that this whole earthly life is just me making my way to Jesus ...in how I live, act towards others...
ultimately pursuing a relationship with God through my daily living.

However...
it is not to say I haven't recently been questioning so much of what my life has been made up of...
a lot of pain
a lot of suffering and heart ache

what is the purpose in all of this?

To be honest, as I shared before, I have been feeling bitter and angry...

when is my miracle going to happen for Hudson?
why do others see miracles unfold before them while I witness my child suffer without end?
why are my family circumstances as such?

I believe being away from my home church for over 2 months has definitely help me wander like a child away from her Father.
I also think I have been doing a lot of "why me" thinking, and I definitley feel the enemy pouncing on its prey...me...
it has really been an opportunity to fill my head with lies and steer me off the path I want and choose to be on.

I am happy to say I made it to church today.
There were a series of events that took place to have
not gone...

Hudson woke at 5a.m. and never fell back asleep, even after bringing him in my bed until 7 a.m. I finally put him back in his crib after the 2 hours of trying to get him to sleep, so I could get a little more sleep.

I also have been pretty sick...a cold, but enough to feel icky and tired, not wanting to do much of anything, much less get all 3 kids out the door by 10:40 a.m. on a Sunday.

But I did, and then got to church where I found out our head pastor, Mark Driscoll, would not be preaching and campus pastors were preaching instead.
Lets just say the campus pastors preaching leaves me looking at my phone, thinking about the day, messing with Hudson...I even texted my husband during his sermon!

I could have easily walked out...but I didn't.
And there was some good points made, but I am just not engaged like I am when Mark preaches.

I also could have made my exit complete when I fed Hudson during the sermon, and I kid you not, I knew this was going to happen, just because I knew every effort would be made in sabatoging me worshiping, praying, serving...
Hudson was pooping in his drawers instantly after I fed him.
I purposely left my bible on my seat and left with him and headed to the car. It was all over his pants and up his tummy because he was sitting in his stroller. Another one of those moments! So I change him, and look in the diaper bag and thankfully had a pair of shorts (clearly from Vegas days) that actually matched his outfit. I couldn't figure out after wiping him clean and preparing to dress him, how he got more poo on his toes...
I looked down on me and yellow poop was smeared against my black shirt(from picking him up out of the stroller) and his foot kicked my shirt getting poop on it! So I took wipes and wiped me down too. Thankfully I was wearing a blazer so I sorta just made sure stains weren't revealed.

I headed back to church.
I prayed.
took communion
worshiped...

it felt amazing.

Tonight I decided to listen to some Driscoll clips from sermons I have missed over the summer....God was speaking to me through his word...

I need to trust Jesus.
No matter if I get my miracle or not...
I need to go back to a Father who loves me and never stopped...
I am sure He is frustrated with me and my wandering...
I know I would be if my child wandered from me, stopped talking to me...

but like the song says, I am getting back up again...

I will go back to church on Sunday
I will start talking to God
praying more...

I did pray for God to soften my heart to those who recieve their miracles or to those whose prayers always seem to get answered ....
I don't like feeling bitter or jealous or angry...
I know with His grace I can change those things within...
apart from Him...those feelings will only grow and spread like wild fire.

I find Gods timing on things impecable...(except his timing for Hudson...but hey I am trying to work on that!)

as I drove to church this morning, I got a call from my husband.
He asked me what I was doing and I told him I was on my way to church...
he told me he had just left an Acts 29 Church (mars hill helps plant these)and he was pretty fired up. His navigation system failed to get him there, and he didn't know how he found it...God lead him I am sure. It was his first time back to church since he left in February for Vegas.

He can't wait for next Sunday...he told me so...

It is so hard to live life not living it for self...wanting the easy road, the perfect marriage, the perfect kids, the grand house, a bank load of money...all the luxuries that come with tons of cash...

it is hard...really hard...

but in the end none of it matters...none of those things can be made perfect, and we all know money can't buy happiness or true security...

I realize my trust, and security belong to Jesus. Only He can provide what I need in this lifetime to survive the here and now...

sleep

this morning...now, as I type!

Oh how I love my sleep...good sleep.
I don't get much of  that really deep, hard sleep...don't remember the last time it felt that good.
My guess...
before Hudson.

I was a typical kid who hated to go to sleep, and now as a grown up, it is my favorite time of day...
the only "me" time I get and usually it results in me not making it through a t.v. show that I was hoping to watch...
my eyes just get too heavy. I try so hard...to watch big people t.v....cuz it is my only opportunity...exhaustion usually wins, and I fall asleep.

Now...
I am not going to complain about sleep and lack of it (because there are too many of you out there that  function on NO sleep) I just function on interrupted, just "o.k." sleep.

The interrupted sleep.....

Well, that would be my newly 9 year old son who has sleep terrors and sleep walks.
It FREAKS me out!
It happens in clusters....nights of interrupted sleep by him walking in my room, standing over me (the freaky part) pacing, talking and making no sense...he can do this several times in one night. Days in a row. He never remembers any of it, and asks me in the morning if he slept walk.

The terrors;
he runs out of his bedroom screaming....and I wake up to thinking someone is mascaraing my son.
It is a horrible way to wake, and makes it even harder to fall back asleep once he is settled.
All of this has been a common occurrence over the last 3 months.
When he was a toddler he would have night terrors and just sit up in his bed screaming and you would have to shake him, pour water on him, just to snap him out of it...so it evolving ...doesn't really surprise me.

Hailey for the most part sleeps well. She used to wet her bed alot, and would wake me for that, but it has been months since I have had to deal with that.

Hudson...
that is part sleep interrupted and partially why I just sleep o.k.

I have always been very grateful, that for the most part Hudson is a good sleeper. Mito kids typically sleep or don't sleep...one extreme or the other. Hudson definitely fits in the sleep category (praise God)
However....
there are things that will keep him awake, probably just like any other kid...

not feeling well
teeth
too hot or cold
a preference (?)...

since we have been home Hudson has been a little more restless at night. I have noticed he is not falling a sleep as quickly. Could have to do with seizures (lack there of) or the fact he has also been "sleeping in" lately.
Last night I believe he was trying to communicate with me.
He typically goes down around 9:30.
Last night he woke me at 11:30. No crying, just making lots of noise, kicking, etc. I went in and put his light show and music on and he quieted.
!:30 a.m. loud shout outs, kicking his blankets...I chose to ignore after checking him on the monitor.
Didn't work...still loud.
Went in there and turned his light show and music on and he quited, until it was over and then started yelling, I believe, for me!
Let me just say...I HATE sleeping with my kids. That is the one thing I like to do alone. I don't want to hear thumb sucking (Hailey) snoring (Hudson and Hailey) I don't want to be kicked or have an arm fling across me (all 3 H's)...I just like my space in my bed...with no one else around (except my husband of course)

But last night I knew Hudson was going to continue and I would get no sleep anyways...
so, one last time I got up, changed his diaper, and put him in my bed, and within minutes....
he was snoring! He never woke again.
I think he just wanted in MY bed! Could it be he was yelling just to get me to give in and scoop him up?

I really don't want this to become a habit...
BUT I also look at his beautiful face and feel grateful I have him to scoop up and that he finds so much comfort with me. One day I may look back and wished I slept with him more.
Then it makes me start thinking about getting him a bed....
maybe he just wants a big bed with down comforters and down pillows...

can you see him in there? Looks good, huh?

Well, sleep interrupted one last time when Hailey came in my room and said the bunk bed was dripping water on her head!?!?!? By this point...I told her to grab a sleeping bag and sleep on the floor...I was DONE getting up. I think she was dreaming...she was fast asleep where she always is when I get her up for school, in bed!

There is always a bit of anxiety...
when you have a sick child, whose health can change quickly, I don't think you ever allow yourself to fall into a really deep sleep. There seems to be a mechanism in the brain always hyper aware of *Hudson noises*

The night before last, I had all 3 H's in my bed....
Hunter slept walk 2times and when he woke he asked me how he got in my bed.
Hailey woke because Hunter wasn't in the room with her so she came in mine and Hudson woke at 5a.m. and I figured what the heck...what's one more...and again, he fell asleep instantly one in my bed!

It is hard to believe Hudson and is trying to communicate the only way he knows how but it is the only explanation for why he settles down instantly, and stays asleep.

I am hoping we can get into an uninterrupted sleep pattern soon.
Just one night with...

decent sleep...like 8 hours...
 uninterrupted, solid sleep....

sounds sooo good.

I do need a good sleep...
I did get a bit of Hudson's cold...
sore throat and slightly stuffy nose, sneezing...feel tired... just simply coldish.

Tonight Hailey is sleeping over at a friends...
just me and the boys...
I think it will be movie night, Hunter's choice, in my bed and lights out early!!!

my heart sinks to say.....

We have been back 2 weeks and...

Hudson is sick!!!!!

I just can't believe how quickly he has come down with *something*
A bad cold and likely will stay a cold because I started him on antibiotics the minute he started spiking a temp.
I have NO back up if he spirals, and mito kids spiral really fast. One minute he can seem "coldish" and the next he is working hard to breathe, gurgly, sleeping a ton...this was the scene on Monday. All I kept thinking was what would I do if he spirals through the night...I have no one! My mom is gone, my husband is far....Hudson's E.R. track record is middle of the nighters....I actually felt fear...for me and Hudson.

Thankfully later in the evening he started giving some good coughs and sneezes which cleared the gook in his throat and his breathing became more and more effortless. With antibiotics on board he seems to have a snotty nose, gunky throat and coarse cough....no more fever. He is sleeping a lot more during the day too, which bothers me. He was so active there for a while, and I know it is just his little bodies way of fighting, but I like the spunky Hudson much better.

With sickness, hate to say it, but I am seeing the stronger seizure resurfacing. I believe it is the tonic he was having before, just hasn't quite gained its strength but definitely ramping up....it's the cry that tells me so....he is crying out as it tries to grip him but doesn't hold him as it did in the past. No clusters after, which is great because that would only lead to vomiting and we don't need that!

I know this is happening because his body is using all its energy to fight this cold, and so it is likely that these stupid seizures would get worse, I am not surprised, it is just hard to watch and hear after catching a break.

Unfortunately, we are all kind of going through this adjustment period...Hailey has a stuffy nose, Hunter's having his emotional issues and it is affecting his health too, and I feel like Hudson's snotty nose on me all day could be the start of my cold!

We are on our own...I can't get sick, must soldier on, it is up to me and only me to stay and keep us afloat....

Dear Anonymous,

I wasn't even going to waste my time or energy responding to the comment you posted...

I can take insults and grenades thrown my way...you can criticize my blogging all you want...

Clearly you knew well enough you were being hurtful by not showing your face...
I am pretty certain no one is holding a gun to your head making you read my blog,

One last thing...
I am sorry for whatever is going on in your life that you have to anonymously be a bully on the internet...

A full first week back home

(a toast to the new school year during our habachi dinner)

The kids had a great first short week back at school. Both kids love their teachers, and are so happy to see friends.
Between back to school and fulfilling my promise to Hunter to have a small sleepover bday party, I have been insanely busy. I decided along with Hunters 2 friends that were to spend the night, I could have the moms over too to catch up since we were gone all summer.
Hunter's birthday is officially over....it has been the longest celebration ever!!!!
He is a very appreciative kid, so I am happy to put a smile on his face. All night and the following morning his little arms and hands would wrap around my waist with a "thank you mommy for the best birthday!" he did this several times, which made my heart gush.
The boys were super excited about bday breakfast....M&M Pancakes topped with whipped cream and drizzled chocolate sauce, homemade hash browns and bacon....they were quite energetic after that breakfast :)

Another big happening...

Hailey is riding a 2 wheel bike!!!

She is so excited and loves it...she is not thrilled about cruising the neighborhood on her brothers old wheels though!

So...

now I breathe, and get ready cuz it is Hudson's turn...

next week he has a dental apt at Children's (his 1st time their) and 2 therapist from the school district will come over. He is still doing well....if you know what I mean ;)
He is sleeping well too....we all are...ahhh, the p.n.w. air...crisp and cool...perfect sleeping weather!

We are struggling with Daddy gone...

I am doing better, I get in my groove and get used to being alone, although at times I just cry too...
it has been very emotional around here...
Hailey has probably had the easiest time so far...
Hunter is really struggling.

Paul and I had a good talk and we sort of have a timeline and plan, so I feel a little better.
I don't want to communicate too much to the kids because we all know how things can change so quickly but I am glad we were able to come up with a game plan.

On top of all that is going on in my household, my mom left last week for a European cruise with Fred :)))) big smile!
I have been taking care of her dog and house, which is just "one more thing"
the dog is peeing and pooping in the house and this morning threw up...I keep the back door open for her all day so there is no reason for the mess....since she had those seizures she has been doing this though.
So I have had to clean up mess after mess.
I talked to my brother and begged him to come and hang at my moms house for few days to give me a break...I told him his niece and nephew really, really miss him ....I will tell him anything just to get him out here to help....I will cook for him every night if he just takes care of that dog for a few days!!!!

No plans for tomorrow...
Hunter has a load of homework already and I am hoping to pick my brother up from the airport.

I decided I am going to try and get to the Y with Hudson this week to get into a routine (crossing fingers) and will return to church next Sunday. (we are recovering from the sleepover today...all of us slept til 9:30 this morning!)

and just in case you didn't know...
fall is my absolute fave time of year which is why I changed the colors on the blog!

an old familiar friend

Back to school...

which brings an old familiar face to the Austin House, well 2 really...

Peace and Quiet...

it is eerily quiet around here this morning.
no giggles, running, fighting, wrestling...you know, the brother sister love/hate relationship!

Just me and Hudson....I don't mind this type of peace and quiet...
I can get the house cleaned up without little ones trailing behind me messing it up...
I can go grocery shopping without 2 other bodies and hands throwing stuff in the cart...
I don't have to listen to the sounds of Sponge Bob, and I-Carly...

I am sure by 3 I will be more than ready for my little ones to be home...
but for now the peace and quiet is a bit refreshing.

I got them to school very "on time" (we are notorious for being tardy daily!)
it worked out well....the classrooms were only a little filled, they didn't seem to notice a ton of dads, and Paul did call them during breakfast to wish them  a good day...it seemed a little easier than anticipated...no tears from any of us.
I have decided to uphold tradition even thought Paul isn't here.
I will set and prepare the table for Japanese dinner tonight on the habachi ...
it is a lot of work for just me and the kids, but I don't want them to go without...so I will just do it on a smaller scale.

Hudson happenings...

he fell off the couch yesterday. He was napping, woke, and within 5 min. of waking I heard him whining and he managed to land opposite direction on the floor. I also found him in a awkward position the day before. I had him on the floor with toys, went to check on his as he was very noisy whining, and he managed to roll himself from back to tummy (never does that direction) and pinned his legs and hips under the tv cabinet preventing him to be able to roll back over to his back! I couldn't believe my eyes...lately there is no safe place to put him!
His seizures have remained ...do I dare say.... small

he is still seizing daily, but it is less-intense, less-frequent, and no clusters....it has been wonderful.

which may be the reason for more movement and activity.

I think he may be in shock....weather speaking
we went from 100+ temps to 50-60 temps....
he has been waking very early, 7 ish, but this mornig 5:30ish...his hands are always freezing...
I bring him in to my bed and he goes to sleep right away...(picture above)
I almost would say he wakes and yells out til I grab him and put him in my bed...
not a habit I want him to get used to!
He needs to get therapy bad, especially while things are going better, but he doesn't start up
P.T. until the 22nd and I haven't even heard from the school for his home-based therapy.

I have been thinking  I may need to consider getting him a bed in the near future...
he is still in his crib.
I like it cuz it is safe...railing and all...he can't roll off like he could a bed.

So....
off to clean, shop, and prepare a back to school dinner for my 1st and 3rd grader
(can't believe how fast they are growing :(
